Harvard School of Dental Medicine selects PlannedLegacy to develop interactive kiosk

Harvard University ShieldNew display creates awareness for capital campaign, provides alumni and donor recognition

Winnipeg, MB - Feb. 18, 2005 - The Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) has selected PlannedLegacy Inc. to develop an interactive multimedia presentation that will create awareness, promote their "Defining the Future of Dental Medicine" capital campaign and provide alumni and donor recognition.

Housed in a touch-screen kiosk, the dynamic presentation will be located in the School's new research and education building, and will also be used to promote HSDM at professional and academic gatherings throughout the campus and at conferences throughout the country.

"The system is being designed to chronicle the School's history, commemorate its alumni, celebrate its achievements and share its vision for the future," said Harv Mock, V.P. of Sales and Marketing at PlannedLegacy.

"Dean R. Bruce Donoff, MD, DMD was inspired by the way that the interactive multimedia presentations worked in the Harvard Business School, the way they created top of mind awareness," said Bradley C. Bauler, Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations at HSDM. "We selected the PlannedLegacy application because it was the best interactive system. It's transportable and easily updated so we can keep it current with the needs of constituents. It fits with what we needed to do at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine."

Modules to be included in the presentation include: Dean's Welcome - text, photograph and video testimonial; A Legacy of Leadership - showcasing the School's history with a timeline and noteworthy alumni; Defining the Future of Dental Medicine Capital Campaign - overview including text, photographs, images, an indexed list of donor names and major donor biographies with photos; Leadership by Example - faculty and administration overview; Board of Fellows - a subsection of the Legacy of Leadership module describing the importance of the Board of Fellows; and an Events Calendar updateable using the PlannedLegacy Web-based content management system. The presentation will also provide up-to-date information on scientists, researchers, educators and activities within the new building.

"The PlannedLegacy system provides us with a powerful method of recognizing those who are doing important work or making an impact at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine," said Bauler. "It is an effective method of recognizing those who are making important contributions to the School."

"Interactive donor recognition and capital campaign promotion systems are becoming increasingly popular with forward-thinking non-profits," said Marshall Posner, President and CEO of PlannedLegacy. "We're thrilled to be a leader in this industry and we're excited to be working with such a distinguished organization."

About the Harvard School of Dental Medicine

Located at 188 Longwood Ave. in Boston's Longwood Medical Area, adjacent to the Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) was originally established by Harvard University in 1867 as Harvard Dental School. Serving as a model for future endeavors, the Harvard Dental School was the first institution of its kind to be closely associated with a university and its medical school.

In 1940, the School was reorganized as Harvard School of Dental Medicine, to place stronger emphasis on the biological basis of oral medicine and to institute multidisciplinary programs of dental research. A special and continuing feature of the curriculum placed dental students in joint classes with medical students for their first two years of basic science and introduced students to clinical medicine at Harvard teaching hospitals and community health centers.

In 1957, HSDM was the first to receive National Institute of Dental Research funding to expand and enhance postdoctoral educational programs by combining advanced clinical and biomedical research training for dentists planning careers in academic dentistry.

Today, HSDM is the smallest school at Harvard University. With a total student body of 280, including pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students spread over several disciplines, HSDM is an intimate community of students and faculty. Even when compared to other dental schools, HSDM is small, and its total living alumni number is approximately 1,800 worldwide. As designed, the proposed facility will fundamentally change the educational experience of every student who graduates from HSDM.

While HSDM is small, it continues to have considerable influence on dental education and research within the broader oral health community. Of the 54 dental school deans in the United States, sixteen are HSDM alumni. These institutions include New York University College of Dentistry, the UCLA School of Dentistry, the UCSF School of Dentistry, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Many other HSDM alumni pursue careers as full-time faculty members, department heads and leaders of organized dentistry.
