Winnipeg, MB - Aug. 2, 2005 - A new interactive fundraising kiosk designed and developed by PlannedLegacy was showcased on June 10, 2005 at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), as the school officially opened its new Research and Education Building and kicked off a major capital campaign.s
Hosted by R. Bruce Donoff DMD, MD, Dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and attended by over 200 luminaries that included Gerard Moufflet, Chair of the HSDM Board of Fellows, alumni, faculty, staff, public officials, business professionals and long time Harvard supporters, the event was the highlight of the annual alumni weekend and graduation at the 138-year-old school.
Located on the historic Longwood Medical Campus, the new five-story building features research facilities on floors 3-5. Faculty and advanced graduate student offices are also integrated throughout the new building along with additional classroom and seminar room space.
Interactive kiosk acts as 24-7 fundraising, marketing and informational tool
A dynamic multimedia presentation housed in a transportable touch-screen kiosk was also on display at the event. Designed and developed by PlannedLegacy and located at the main entrance to the new Research and Education building, the 24-7 fundraising and marketing tool impressed all in attendance with its ease of use and compelling interactive content.
“People were very excited about the kiosk and its ability to promote development initiatives,” said Mary Cassesso, Dean for Administration and Finance. “They were impressed with the quality and quantity of information and the fact that you could interact with the display and select what you wanted to read using the touch screen. It was a front and center reminder of the power of information.
“We’re excited about the prospect of being able to provide up-to-date information to people as soon as they enter the facility. They can now learn more about the school and our history; discover where we’ve come from and where we are going, read about our capital campaign, its progress and supporters, and find out about current events – all in one location.
“It’s a great way to keep everyone connected and keep alumni apprised of what’s going on. It’s also a way to remind alumni of how the school has affected their lives and careers.”
Future plans include enhanced alumni and donor recognition
Future plans for the interactive kiosk include the development of modules which may include: alumni of distinction; new research and treatment developments; enhanced historical information and detailed donor recognition which may also include clickable names of selected contributors with text, photos, bios, audio and video, depending on the contribution level and/or the wishes of the individual donor.
“The kiosk is both versatile and functional,” continued Cassesso. “Not only can we showcase our important development milestones, we can also display current events within the building for visitors, staff and faculty. Additionally, we can use the kiosk to help people find departments and people within the building.
“We are one of the smaller schools on campus, with limited resources, and this puts us front and center. The Dean and Chair of HSDM were delighted with the kiosk, but it also impressed many of the people with its ability to do so much - reconnect with alumni, promote fundraising events and capital campaigns, expound on the history of the school and its importance, promote current events and provide directional information.”
“It’s a great addition to the facility.”

About the Harvard School of Dental Medicine
Located at 188 Longwood Ave. in Boston's Longwood Medical Area, adjacent to the Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) was originally established by Harvard University in 1867 as Harvard Dental School. Serving as a model for future endeavors, the Harvard Dental School was the first institution of its kind to be closely associated with a university and its medical school.
In 1940, the School was reorganized as Harvard School of Dental Medicine, to place stronger emphasis on the biological basis of oral medicine and to institute multidisciplinary programs of dental research. A special and continuing feature of the curriculum placed dental students in joint classes with medical students for their first two years of basic science and introduced students to clinical medicine at Harvard teaching hospitals and community health centers.
In 1957, HSDM was the first to receive National Institute of Dental Research funding to expand and enhance postdoctoral educational programs by combining advanced clinical and biomedical research training for dentists planning careers in academic dentistry.
Today, HSDM is the smallest school at Harvard University. With a total student body of 280, including pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students spread over several disciplines, HSDM is an intimate community of students and faculty. Even when compared to other dental schools, HSDM is small, and its total living alumni number is approximately 1,800 worldwide. As designed, the proposed facility will fundamentally change the educational experience of every student who graduates from HSDM.
While HSDM is small, it continues to have considerable influence on dental education and research within the broader oral health community. Of the 54 dental school deans in the United States, sixteen are HSDM alumni. These institutions include New York University College of Dentistry, the UCLA School of Dentistry, the UCSF School of Dentistry, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Many other HSDM alumni pursue careers as full-time faculty members, department heads and leaders of organized dentistry.
